Front Cover & Contents page Layout

These results show that most teenagers choose a magazine by its colours and layout, rather than the information included. The magazine must be 100% appropriate for the target audience, inorder for it to gain their attention.

The results also prove that people are not willing to pay much more than £2 for a magazine. This is probably because most celebrity stories and information included in magazines, can be found on the internet for free. This means in order for a magazine to sell, it must have unique qualities.

Researching Existing School Magazines

We can't actually find any official school magazines on the internet. This is probably because they are specifically for the school. Any information included will relate to the students and parents of the school, so it is irrelevant to anyone else.

Colour Testing

Pink is often associated with girls. When a baby girl is born, it is normally dressed in pink clothes. This stereotype has changed over time, because the colour pink used to be associated with baby boys. This is because pink comes from the colour red, which represents blood and violence.

Blue is often associated with boys. Baby boys are usually dressed in blue. This stereotype has changed over time, because people used to dress their baby girls in blue. They did this because blue is the colour The Virgin Mary wore. It represents purity and innocence. It is also very calm and serene.

Red can represent two very different ideas. It can represent horror, blood, gore, and violence. It can also represent the devil. On the other hand, love can be associated with love, romance and passion.  It encourages confidence and action; and catches attention.

Green is often used to represent the earth, and nature. Companies use it to portray the idea of ‘being green’.  It is soothing, and helps to alleviate depression, anxiety and nervousness.

Yellow is the colour of optimism, happiness, and enlightenment. It represents joy.

Purple has royal and mystic qualities. It is calming, uplifting, and stimulates creativity.

Brown is associatied with all things natural and organic. It gives a feeling of wholesomeness.

White represents purity, neutrality, and cleanliness. It also represents the idea of fresh beginnings.

Grey is unsettling and is often associated with depression, loss and misery.

Black is powerful, authoritive, and sophisticated. It is mysterious, and can evoke strong emotions. Too much black can be overwhelming.

What's included in school magazines?

This is an example of a school magazine contents page. These are some ideas of articles that could be included in my school magazine.

It is set into two seperate sections; 'Features' and 'Regulars'.

Most of the information included is school news and announcements. This is an effeicient way for school students to be informed of everything new within the school, that they need to know about.

Things students are most likely to be interested in are the holiday updates, the rewards updates, and the longer lunchtime announcement.

This is another example of a school magazine contents page. This one has been split into sub-headings of each subject. Underneath there are the announcements for each subject.

This school magazine is alot more simple. It includes school news and information about what's going on. It also includes special announcements for each subject.
Magazine cover Analysis

The big, bold font for the title catches the readers attention. This is because it is extremely easy to read at a glance.

The bright red lettering compliments the her red dress. This makes the cover look alot more 'put together' and sophisticated. Also, red is a very classy, sophisticated colour, which compliments her overall classy look.

Amanda Seyfried is the cover girl for this magazine. She is a role model to alot of women and young girls around the world. She is known for her elegant beauty. Her pose is very simple, emphasising her classy and effortless look.

The words 'Diamond Giveaway!' are bolder and larger than the rest of the sub-heading. This means it will be the first thing the reader notices. Everyone loves good free'bees, so this will gain alot more attention.

Beauty and fashion tips are advertised all over the front cover. This shows the reader straight away that this magazine is about fashion and beauty. These tips are everday problems for women, so they will want to buy the magazine to find out how they can avoid these problems.
Contents page analysis

The contents is divided by contents stories, fashion and special features, over a two page spread. This means there is a great deal of space for the compostion. The text is neatly set into paragrapghs, and there is still room for eye-catching pictures.

On the first page the first thing that catches the readers attention is the title; "Vogue", in big, bold lettering.
The 2nd thing that catches the readers eye is the large picture of a fashion model. This picture immediately gives the reader an idea of what to expect if they carry on reading. The model is young, skinny and outgoing. Women who aspire to be like this may carry on reading to find out her 'secrets' of beauty.

The colour scheme, red & black, is very sophisticated and simple, yet eye catching. The bright red, bold font, stands out against the white background, making it easy for the eye to be drawn to the important parts.

On the 2nd page, there are two images.

One of a girl underwater, in a wet suit. This image is rather unusual, and is probably not what the reader was expecting to see. This will trigger questions in the readers mind, making them want to read on to find out more.

The second image is a picture of Emma Watson; known for her amazing acting, and elegant beauty. She is a role model to many women and young girls, therefore this picture will attract anyone who looks up to her.
Font testing

AlphabetSoup Tilt BT: This font could be used for a heading/title, because it is fun and bold. It is more likely to be used on a child’s magazine, because it is fun and unsophisticated.
Elementary SF: This font is very simple but effective. It is extremely easy to read, and could be used for a child’s magazine, or adult. It looks simple, but sophisticated. It would be effective on a page where there a lot of pictures to concentrate on, because it will not over power them.
Diamond Heavy SF: This font would be most likely to be used in a men’s magazine. It would be effective because it is bold, and eye catching, yet very easy to read.
Bradley Hand ITC: This font would be most effective in a women’s magazine. On pages like advice columns, a font like this would be used because it looks hand written. It emphasises the fact that the women/man has written back to the problem.
Balloonist SF: Again, this font would be most effective in a children’s magazine, because it is easy to read. It could even be used in a men’s magazine, because it is bold and eye catching. Maybe it would be effective in a car magazine?
Candy Buzz BTN: This font would look good in a girl’s magazine. It is fun, simple and girly.
Casper Light SF: This font is sophisticated and simple. It would definitely be effective in any sophisticated magazine; possibly men’s. It could be used for a car/golf/political magazine. A magazine that offers more information than entertainment.
